The series Koko emerged due to a personal experience Ricardo Jarama had in Peru in 2005. In the house of a friend where he was staying, he was overcome by a dark feeling, which had quite a negative impact on him. To him, it felt like an inner demon and its presence continued in the first years after he moved to Greece in 2007. It had been a difficult start in Greece anyway, because he experienced it as a huge culture shock. This inner demon amplified it. Thanks to the Peruvian ayahuasca ritual, in which a hallucinogenic tea is drunk under the supervision of a shaman, he was able to face his demon and say goodbye to him. Just like we all have our demons and have to find a way to get rid of them. From then on, Jarama started calling him Koko, and it became the main character in the eponymous series. By depicting him, Jarama could ask Koko to start protecting him from then on.
At first, he was a small figure in several paintings of the Naturama series. Koko began increasingly to turn into the protagonist, and in his own series he is depicted life-sized on canvas as a colourful monster, for example in the works The Koko I (2008) and Nush (2019). During the corona pandemic, Jarama continued to work on the Koko series, and gradually the series Futuro emerged.
